Started in 2016 as a way to build a community of aspiring comic creators, while at the same time, learning what I can first hand from established creators, I created the Comic Arts Workshop.
Monthly Guest Speakers
We have been honored to have many distinguished creators speak at our meetings including Neal Adams, Gina Gagliano, Anne Nocenti, David Saylor, Anthony Marques, Robyn Chapman, Fabrice Sapolsky, Andrea Colvin, Heather Antos, Camilla Zhang, Nicole Virella, Chris Sotomayor and many, many more. Starting in 2020, some of our events will be virtual.
We also offer an online course to help creators produce a finished comic story they can self-publish, submit to anthologies or use as a pitch to publishers. Topics covered include writing instruction, better art, marketing, breaking in, the graphic novel industry, the business side and countless others! This include weekly live roundtables where workshop members can give and receive feedback and support on their work. One-on-one coaching session with Ramon are also available. The 2018 workshop cohort produced and kickstarted an anthology Create, Destroy, Repeat which was published by Pronto Comics! The next session begins in July 2020!
Aside from the monthly meetings, we hold an annual Holiday Party, help organize Diversity Comic Con at FIT and attend various comics-related happenings as a group.
Some of our members have gone on to do work for publishers like AWA, Little Brown Book, The Beat, Benchmark Publishing and Scholastic with help from connections they made at our workshop! In comics, networking is the name of the game!
In the summer, Ramon teaches a one-week comics camp to kids at FIT. Each student contributes a page towards a comic anthology. To register, click here.
